Can you have conjunctivitis caused by contacts?

Today my eye was really hurting and burning so when I got home I looked at it and it was really red like all around & a little bit of...goop i guess kept forming in the tear duct. My mom said that I probably have conjunctivitis caused by my contacts (they are kinda old I need to order new ones). Is that even possible? If so is it contagious and do I need to go to the doctor?? Thanks in advance! :)
