What to do about 3mo olds eye goo?

My son is 3 months. About a week ago I noticed his left eye had some goop in it. A couple days later he and I both came down with colds. He still has some congestion, etc..typical common cold things..the only difference is his eyes. The goop is on both eyes now. Its not severe, but I never had this happen with my now 2 year old. I see no need at this point to take him to the doctor as its not severe, but just wondering what you other mommys did and if its just part of a cold?
