Can birth control delay your period? And by how many days?

I started birth control almost 3 weeks ago now and I am 5 days late on my period...but also I have been sexually active but I'm not sure if I can miss a period that fast. If it's just the birth control what's the longest I will go without a period and when should I check to make sure I'm not pregnant?
